The 64 year-old Zavaleta resides in his birthplace of Mexico City, where he also obtained an education at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado — or the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking, also known as “La Esmeralda.”

Like most realist oil paintings, Zavaleta’s involve plenty of layering and glazing. He begins with a weaker palette and builds his way up to a higher saturation. The resulting compositions are mildly vivid, with a commercial brightness. That’s to be expected of any contemporary still life painter working in the sales-focused sphere of “fine art.”
